Suryanar Kovil, Kumbakonam

Posted on August 1, 2026 by Tejaswini

It is the only Navagraha temple where all nine planetary deities have individual sanctums.

Devotees usually visit this temple first before undertaking the Navagraha temple circuit around Kumbakonam.

Suryanar Kovil is one of the most famous Navagraha temples in Tamil Nadu and is dedicated to Surya (the Sun God). Built during the 11th century CE under the Chola dynasty, it is unique because it has separate shrines for all nine Navagrahas (the nine planetary deities) within the same temple complex.

Suryanar Kovil, near Aduthurai, about 15 km from Kumbakonam, Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu.
