The Sarabeswarar Sannidhi (sanctum) at Thirubuvanam is one of the most famous shrines dedicated to this rare form of Shiva.

According to the Shiva Purana and later traditions, Shiva assumed the form of Sharabha (a powerful mythical being with features of a lion and bird) to pacify the intense fury of Bhagwan Narasimha after the slaying of Hiranyakashipu.
